A pinch of salt, several tonnes actually

-

uttalam has been experiencing temperatures more suitable for salt production these days.

The Puttalam salt industry was under the control of the government, then the Palaviya salt factory gradually became a cooperative business partnership for nearly 35 years. Two private companies own a 34% share.

H M Ranasinghe, Director, Puttalam Salt Ltd said they produce

25,000 metric tonnes of salt a year. There is high international demand for vacuum salt.

“We own a land of 700 acres and that is why we are achieving this goal. There is demand for Puttalam salt. The only hindrance was the climatic inconsistency, with the present climate prevailing, we will be able to produce more,” he said.

Salt production in Sri Lanka shows much growth potential, and paves the way for overseas investors to take part in it.
