Mirigama-Kurunegala expressway to be opened next month

The expressway between Mirigama and Kurunegala will be declared open early next month, a senior Highways Ministry official said. The expressway will span 40.9 km.

The project is nearly completed and the finishing touches are in progress the official said. Around Rs 149 billion was spent on the expressway project including Rs. ten billion for land acquisitio­n.

He said the estimated travel time between Mirigama and Kurunegala will be reduced to 20 minutes.

Around 10 km of the expressway is elevated as it runs on columns, and it consists of 13 bridges, and five interchang­es at Mirigama, Nakalagamu­wa, Dambokka, Kurunegala and Yaggapitiy­a.

Meanwhile constructi­on of another section of the Expressway between Pothuhera and Galagedara through Rambukkana has begun. The Kadawatha-Mirigama stretch, under constructi­on by a Chinese firm, will be completed in 2024.
