Raising their voices in Christmas harmony

Leading schools across the country come together to bring us those favourite carols

-

Christmas carols, those wellloved favourites we all enjoy singing at this time of the year help us enjoy this season of goodwill and carry the message of peace to all mankind in our hearts. This Christmas, the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR) which was established to take forward the reconciliation related policies of the government to all levels of society, has stepped forward to bring together schools from across the country to spread harmony through song.

Leading schools have joined in enthusiastically and the programme titled ‘Voices of Unity’ is not to be missed for the levels of participation are indeed noteworthy. From Colombo, there will be the choirs of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, Bishop’s College and Ladies’ College while from Kandy, there will be Hillwood College, Mowbray College and Trinity College. Two schools from Jaffna are also joining in; St. John’s College and Chundikuli Girls’

College. The choirs will sing carols in all three languages.

ONUR has identified that it is timely to engage with and involve this generation of students who will have the responsibility for leading the country in the years ahead. “We are very keen in having their active engagement in building national unity and reconciliation,” a statement from ONUR said.

“Hence through this Christmas carols programme we have reached out to students from different parts of the country belonging to different religious and ethnic groups to demonstrate their aspirations for a reconciled future,” the statement added.

Sadly due to the COVID situation, the choirs will not be physically present on the same stage but have videoed their perfomances. The programme will be telecast on Monday, December 20 from 7.30 to 8.30 p.m. on Channel 1 MTV. It is a rare opportunity to see these leading choirs sing those Christmas carols you have been waiting to hear.

So keep a date on December
