DMH is ready

-

Foresight and dedication have paid off at the De Soysa Maternity Hospital (Teaching) in Colombo.

Timely has been the setting up of the 40-bed spacious and airy COVID-19 complex, a ‘people’s gift to the people’ to provide comfort and to expectant mothers who have got infected.

“At one time we had 36 mothers in the complex,” says Director Dr. Upuli Wijemanne, pointing out that they now have 22 mothers. Since it was opened on January 4, they have treated 80 patients.

She adds that the mothers so far treated have had mild disease and did not need oxygen. About eight babies have also been here with their mothers, occupying the cots with cartoon characters pasted to the wooden frame at the foot of the beds.

The complex also includes a High Dependency Unit (HDU), a scanning room, a labour room and a set of spacious toilets as well as a few beds in a separate section for any staff members (female or male) who may get COVID-19.
