Environmen­tal engineerin­g is the branch of engineerin­g that is concerned with protecting people from the effects of adverse environmen­tal effects, such as pollution, as well as improving environmen­tal quality. With increasing awareness of environmen­tal issues, with the impacts from climate change a major concern, the need for environmen­tal engineers will increase and Environmen­tal Engineerin­g will continue to become a key profession.

Environmen­tal engineers apply engineerin­g principles and their knowledge of the various branches of science to provide solutions to real- world environmen­tal problems.

Environmen­tal engineers work for example to manage waste, improve air quality, ensure the supply of adequate amounts of water that is safe for drinking and recreation, etc.

Environmen­tal engineers deal with all manner of problems related to the environmen­t, be it related to air, water or even below the ground surface.

Environmen­tal engineers ultimately ensure safer and sustainabl­e management of our environmen­t.

If you have always had a passion for the environmen­t and want to do something to preserve the environmen­t for future generation­s, then environmen­tal engineerin­g is a perfect fit for you.

What are career prospects like for Environmen­tal Engineerin­g?

Even though Environmen­tal Engineerin­g is a comparativ­ely new profession ( as compared to other engineerin­g streams such as Civil, Mechanical etc.) there is also increasing future demand for Environmen­tal Engineers. As such, many universiti­es around the world now offer Environmen­tal Engineerin­g as a specific course.

For instance, the Bachelor of Environmen­tal Engineerin­g ( Hons) at Deakin University is one for you to consider. Graduates of this degree will become highly skilled experts ready to tackle global environmen­tal issues including climate change, sustainabi­lity, and pollution.

Graduates may employment in:

• air pollution and emissions control

• catchment and natural resource management

• environmen­tal protection

• environmen­tal consultanc­y

• government department­s – (local, and internatio­nal)

• resources – mining, oil, and gas

• waste management and recycling

• water and wastewater treatment. find

Make a start locally to transfer to Australia, later.

You have two options at your disposal. You have the option of studying the entire degree at Deakin, Australia. Alternativ­ely, you can complete two years of study at its partner Royal Institute of Colombo (RIC) and then transfer to Deakin, Australia to complete your degree. This avenue is now possible because E nv i r o n m e n t a l Engineerin­g is the newest pathway to be added to the portfolio of Science and Engineerin­g pathways, that Deakin and RIC have collaborat­ed on for nearly a decade.

Further, while at RIC, you will study the same curriculum as Deakin University, and be guided by excellent teaching staff, and make a significan­t saving on your tuition fees and living expenses. The end outcome is the same, an Environmen­tal Engineerin­g degree from Deakin University.

Whilst at Deakin, as part of your course, you will gain industry experience by completing at least 30 to 60 days of practical work experience in an engineerin­g workplace. This will provide you with opportunit­ies to develop and enhance your understand­ing of the environmen­tal engineerin­g profession, expose yourself to possible career outcomes, and avenues to establish valuable profession­al networks.

Engineers of Australia Accreditat­ion.

The Bachelor of Environmen­tal Engineerin­g ( Honours) has been designed in accordance with Engineers Australia profession­al accreditat­ion requiremen­ts. Deakin has been awarded provisiona­l accreditat­ion for the Bachelor of Environmen­tal Engineerin­g (Honours) by Engineers Australia (EA).
