Pesandu Liyanage wins 9th Sri Lanka Chess Grand Prix 2022

Pesandu Rashmitha Liyanage of D.S. Senanayake College won the

9th Sri Lanka Grand Prix 2022 convincing­ly, after beating S. Sivathanuj­an in a close game. In the finals Pesandu beat Sivathanuj­an of Kokavil Hindu College by 1½-½ to secure the championsh­ip.

In the double round finals, Pesandu won his first game with white pieces and earned a draw to finish the event in the second game where he won the gold medal, the trophy in addition to a cash award of Rs. 60,000. Earlier in the semi-finals Pesandu beat Osheen de Silva to reach the finals. Sivathanuj­an had to settle with the silver medal as he received Rs. 40,000 as cash award.

In the consolatio­n final.

Osheen de Silva of Sri Lanka Navy beat Vinuda Shenal Gunatilake of Royal College by 1½-½ . Osheen beat Vinuda in the first round and earned a draw in the second round to finish with the bronze medal and a cash award of Rs. 25,000. Vinuda had to satisfy with the fourth position and a cash award of Rs.15,000. Buddhika Amarasingh­e beat Kosala Sandeepa Amarasingh­e and was placed fifth to claim a cash award of Rs. 10,000.

The 9th Sri Lanka Chess Grand Prix 2022, conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka. Unfortunat­ely, Surath Wijeratne withdrew from the event after the first round and a forfeit point was awarded to all opponents in the each round as a result.
