Visakhians and Joes make a splash in the waters
Visakha Vidyalaya and St. Joseph’s College topped their gender categories at last week’s National Age Group Relay Championship scoring 162 and 181 points, respectively. In the first such meet held since the pandemic, worked off in the Sugathadasa Swimming Complex, the Visakians were head and shoulders above their counterparts with a substantial lead of 66 points, ahead of Lyceum, Wattala who finished second with four points shy of 100.
While in the Boy’s category, it was a coincidental finish between arch rivals Joes and St. Peter’s College, with the former clinching the first place. However, unlike in the Girls’ category, the Boy’s category had a quite a close call with only 22 points separating the first two. Though Lyceum Wattala’s boys ended up top three in this category too, they were only placed at a distant 85 points.
In the five age categories, Visakha came on top in the Under-11 Freestyle and Under-20 Medley and settled for third in Under-13 and Under-15 categories. On the other hand, the Joes dominated in several age groups taking up one of the top three positions.
In the Under-11 and Under-17 Medleys and Under-11 Freestyle events, they earned the top place while in the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-20 Medleys, it was all third places for the Darley Road boys.
The meet saw around 600 athletes representing 36 schools and clubs swimming to secure spots in 50m Medley and Freestyle relays in the Under-11, 13, 15, and 17 and Under and Above 20 age categories.
