Visakhians and Joes make a splash in the waters

Visakha Vidyalaya and St. Joseph’s College topped their gender categories at last week’s National Age Group Relay Championsh­ip scoring 162 and 181 points, respective­ly. In the first such meet held since the pandemic, worked off in the Sugathadas­a Swimming Complex, the Visakians were head and shoulders above their counterpar­ts with a substantia­l lead of 66 points, ahead of Lyceum, Wattala who finished second with four points shy of 100.

While in the Boy’s category, it was a coincident­al finish between arch rivals Joes and St. Peter’s College, with the former clinching the first place. However, unlike in the Girls’ category, the Boy’s category had a quite a close call with only 22 points separating the first two. Though Lyceum Wattala’s boys ended up top three in this category too, they were only placed at a distant 85 points.

In the five age categories, Visakha came on top in the Under-11 Freestyle and Under-20 Medley and settled for third in Under-13 and Under-15 categories. On the other hand, the Joes dominated in several age groups taking up one of the top three positions.

In the Under-11 and Under-17 Medleys and Under-11 Freestyle events, they earned the top place while in the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-20 Medleys, it was all third places for the Darley Road boys.

The meet saw around 600 athletes representi­ng 36 schools and clubs swimming to secure spots in 50m Medley and Freestyle relays in the Under-11, 13, 15, and 17 and Under and Above 20 age categories.
