Despite the ongoing health sector strikes some doctors and hospital staff were making personal sacrifices to save lives.

On Thursday doctors and staff at two hospitals together successfully saved the lives of two prematurely born babies born at Passara Hospital.

The incident had taken place when a 28- year- old pregnant mother from Passara Elatabe estate got admitted to Passara hospital for the delivery of her twins.

Even though the hospital staff and the district medical officers were preparing to deliver the two babies, the hspital lacked necessary life-saving equipment for the 28- week old twins. The district medical officer at Passara had notified the Badulla General Hospital Neonatal Unit of the situation.

However no ambulance was available at the Badulla Hospital Neonatal Unit.

Therefore Dr. Gihan Hettiarchchi, the senior medical officer at the neonatal unit, immediately gathered some breathing aid equipment and an incubator and drove to Passara hospital in his personal vehicle.

Soon after Health officers at the Badulla Hospital managed to send an ambulance and transfer the two babies to the neonatal unit at the Badulla hospital. The hospital staff said the twins, a girl and boy were in good health.

Wadani, the mother of the twins, said she is happy as the babies are safe. She said with the arrival of the twins she was now a mother of four.
