Bipartisan attitudes could mend fences

- Dr. Channa Ratnatunga

I am sure most citizens living in Kandy would have been delighted that at last the much vaunted Central Expressway is slowly becoming a reality. A newspaper article of January 20 expressed regret that the construction of 37 km of the 41 km stretch, which was completed by the previous administration was not appreciated. This apparently included design, plotting the course, the acquisition of the requisite properties, awarding a contract to local engineers and construction.

While congratulating the former Minister of Highways Lakshman Kiriella for his belief in our own civil engineers’ ability to do these mega projects, I was surprised that no representative of the previous regime was present at the opening ceremony. Even the speeches made no mention of their contribution. Alas, if what was contended was true, these lapses reflect the quality of thinking that plagues the current administration.

Bipartisan attitudes would go a long way in mending fences. We citizens are those who have to bear the brunt of such stupid ‘politics’, as shown in the chaos we live in today.
