WNPS lecture focuses on protecting our city of wetlands
Colombo is a city of wetlands. They play a vital role in reducing the impact of flooding, in absorbing pollutants from the air, improving water quality, whilst providing a habitat for a wide diversity of plants and animals. Despite continuing loss and degradation, they still cover over 200 sq.km of the metropolis and its suburbs.
This month’s Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) lecture ‘Action to protect wetlands: For people and nature’ will be delivered by three experts in the field – Prof. Siril Wijesundara, Dr. Sevvandi Jayakody and Dr. Sampath Seneviratne, on February 17 at the Jasmine Hall, BMICH at 6 p.m., also online, on FB and via Zoom.
Prof. Siril Wijesundara, a Research Professor attached to the National Institute of Fundamental
Studies, Kandy who retired as the Director General of the Department of National Botanic Gardens will make the introductory presentation. Prof. Sevvandi Jayakody who holds a PhD in Zoology and currently serves as Senior Lecturer at the Wayamba University will speak on the ‘People Component of Wetlands’. Prof. Sampath Seneviratne, President of the Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka (FOGSL) who has a PhD in Evolutionary Ecology will speak on ‘ Wetlands connect us – it’s time for us to connect with Wetlands’.
The WNPS lecture is supported by the Nations Trust Bank and is open to all. Entrance is free and all attending in person are requested to follow the health and safety requirements at the BMICH.
