Deakin University, Australia, strives to continuously advance education through progressive

teaching, innovative research and global engagement. With a student-focused culture and a

reputation for being accessible and supportive, Deakin assures their graduates a successful future.

Deakin University is committed to dedicated in-country partnerships with leading Sri Lankan higher education providers, in both the private and public sector, for

undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. Many of these partnerships areRecognition for Prior learning (RPL) arrangements, where Deakin University’s pathway programmes allow Sri Lankan students to commence their degree via a Deakin partner institute in Sri Lanka, and consequently transfer to a Deakin campus in Australia, to complete their degree.

The credit system of RPL, is the recognition of previous study, that can reduce the number of units needed to study at Deakin, thereby allowing students to complete their degree in Australia, without the need to undertake the full duration of the degree in Australia. The amount of recognition granted depends on the studies undertaken as part of diploma studies in Sri Lanka, and may vary based on the programme, the majors chosen and professional recognition requirements. A formal determination of RPL is completed upon application to Deakin.

Why is a transfer option a good idea?

It is natural for parents to worry about their child’s coping abilities and security, especially embarking on study in a foreign country. As many international school students leave school at the tender ages of 16 or 17, one or two years at a Deakin partner institute in Sri Lanka allows time for young students to emotionally mature, and receive higher education exposure locally, before navigating abroad on their own. This can greatly reduce the stress and worry for both students and their parents.

Studying at a pathway allows for students to explore and begin to learn independence, without being thrown “into the deep end”, having to manage and juggle several aspects of independent study, living abroad, and adulthood, all at once. Thus, the transition to Deakin in Australia can be a lot smoother via an established pathway in Sri Lanka. With rising costs of university education becoming an increasing concern for parents (especially when there is more than one child to educate), financing an overseas education can be a great worry for parents. By choosing a Deakin partner institute, for part of the studies, there is an incredible amount of savings opportunities- just one year of study at one of Deakin’s partner institutes in Sri Lanka can save upwards of 8 million rupees per year, on tuition, living and accommodation costs in Australia.

Deakin University’s partners and the pathways in Sri Lanka, include, the Royal Institute of Colombo (RIC), for Science and Engineering pathways (with the latest addition of Environmental Engineering in 2021); Sri Lanka Technological Campus (SLTC), for Artificial Intelligence and other Computing pathways, as well as Engineering; Prospects College of Higher Education (PCHE), for Education and Psychology; CICRA for Cybersecurity, ANC for Engineering, Computing and Science pathways; the International Institute of Health Sciences (IIHS) for Nursing, Sports Science, Biomedical Science, and Business pathways; the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and the University of Moratuwa; the Sri Lanka

Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) for Engineering, Computing, and Nursing pathways; the Australian College of Business and Technology (ACBT) for Business pathways; the Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT) for Computing and Business pathways, and the International College of Business and Technology (ICBT) for Engineering pathways.

Ultimately, Deakin University and its partners in Sri Lanka are fully committed to offering a seamless transition for pathway students, as well as assuring parents of a world-class education for their children.
