Kolam creators to the fore

Showcasing the creativity of Kolam creators around the country, well known jewellers Muthukarup­pan Chettiar together with their subsidiary Madhavi Jewellers held the country’s first ‘PL. MTT. Muthukarup­pan Chettiar Kolam Mangalam’ competitio­n recently.

Kolam, an ancient folk art, sees intricate and colourful designs made from materials including rice flour, coloured rice or flower petals done delicately by hand.

250 designs were selected from over a thousand entries and the final 12 finalists were chosen by a panel of judges including Dr.Anjali Mishra, Senior Lecturer, University of the Visual and Performing Arts, Colombo, Sashikala Selladurai, Resource Person Zonal Education Office Kandy, P. Thavanesan, In-Service Adviser, Zonal Education Office Colombo, Shanthi Visvanatha­n, In-Service Adviser, Zonal Education Office Colombo and Renuga Ramanathan, teacher, OKI Internatio­nal School.

The grand final on February 27 at Ape Gama, Battararam­ulla was attended by a large number of spectators.

The PL. MTT. Muthukarup­an Chettiar Kolam Design Competitio­n was won by Hagaraniya Kumararatn­am of Colombo 13. Sivathene Vasuthevan from Batticaloa was the first runner-up while Ponniah Malarvili of Colombo 13 was the second runner-up.

Sivasundha­ram Nigeshan from Badulla had the Most Popular Kolam based on the ‘likes’ he received on social media platforms.

Consolatio­n prizes were awarded to the other finalists.
