Attack on journalist's resident: Several statements recorded but no suspects identified

Three Police teams investigating the attack on journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama’s residence in Piliyandala are still waiting for reports pertaining to the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera footage of the incident from the Moratuwa University to identify the two vehicles used by the attackers.

The Police teams are currently doing technical analysis to identify the suspects and the vehicles they came in, Police Media Spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said.

“The Police have found 14 locations through telecommunication towers in Moratuwa where the two vehicles had travelled and the Moratuwa University is preparing a detailed report,” he said.

Earlier, the Police analysed more than 80 CCTV cameras to identify the vehicles used by the attackers and some footage had been sent to Moratuwa University for further analysis.

SSP Thalduwa said more than 30 statements had been recorded in connection with the attack and no suspects had been identified yet.

“We are still tracking signals from telecommunication towers and we have not yet found a suspicious phone number,” he said.

Earlier, the Police had also questioned decrowned Mrs. Sri Lanka Pushpika de Silva in connection to the incident. She was the second high-profile person to be questioned, following Ape Janabala Party Chairman Samantha Prasanna Perera.

The Police had also provided security for the journalist and his house while search operations by patrol officers continued in the area, SSP Thalduwa said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Samarawickema said he had no faith in the Police investigation. He said the Police officers were taking matters too lightly.
