Prof. M. M. Pathmalal appointed Dean of USJ’s Graduate Studies Faculty for the second time

Prof. M. M. Pathmalal was appointed as the new Dean of the Graduate Studies Faculty at the University of Sri Jayewarden­epura and he began his duties this week. He was appointed as the 6th Dean of the Graduate Studies Faculty for the second time.

Senior Professor M. M. Pathmalal is a professor of Zoology, the Co-chair of the Research Council and the director of the University of Sri Jayewarden­epura’s Centre for Water Quality and Algae Research.

He received his BSc (Honours) Degree with a first-class from the University of Sri Jayewarden­epura in 1992, an MSc from the Department of Life Conservati­on Science in 1998, and a PhD from the Department of Microbial Ecology and Eco-toxicology of Japan’s Ehime University in 2001.

Prof. Pathmalal is a distinguis­hed, highly cited researcher in eco-toxicology, water quality, bioremedia­tion of natural and xenobiotic chemicals, and cyanotoxin, and has blazed track with the number of world-first records for the scientific field.

Internatio­nally, Prof. Pathmalal is an incumbent honorary fellow scientist of Robert Gordon University in the UK and Sydney University of Australia and has held many post-doctoral fellowship­s, namely, at the Institute of the Advanced Science and Technology, the Institute of Health and Safety Research of Japan, the Department of Phototoxin, School of Pharmacolo­gy, Robert Gordon University in the UK, Leverhulme Trust Post-Doctoral Visiting Research Fellowship UK, Global Centre for Environmen­tal Studies at Japan’s Ehime University, the UK’s Commonweal­th Research Fellowship and the UK’s Biotechnol­ogy and Biological Science Research Council Science.
