‘Bak Maha Akunu’ in Matara to remember Dayananda Gunawarden­a

Rememberin­g the death anniversar­y of the late playwright Dayananda Gunawarden­a, his popular play ‘Bak Maha Akunu’ will go on the boards after a lapse of 40 years at 2.30 pm and 6.30pm on Aprik 3 at the main hall of St. Thomas’ College, Matara.

‘Bak Maha Akunu’ was first performed in April 1963, with the ‘revolving stage’ being introduced to Sri Lanka. Arrangemen­ts are being made by the late dramatist’s ‘ Nalu Kirthi Sabha Theater Group’ to have this performed on a revolving stage probably after it’s original production in 1963.

‘Bak Maha Akunu’ will feature veteran actors and actress as well as young and talented individual­s. The cast includes Jayanath Bandara, Rathnashee­la Perera, Sunil Tillekerat­ne, Janaka Ranasinghe,

Indika Jayasinghe, Kelum Gamlath, Tha r a n ga Kumari, Yohan Ranasinghe, Mahesh Amarakoon and Sanjeevani Wijekoon.

Pubudu Walpita will lead the orchestra to the original music composed by the late Somadasa Elvitigala. Costumes are by Irangani and Abhimangal­a Gunawarden­a, stage management by Asoka Jayasinghe, makeup by Chandrasir­i Rajapaksha, choreograp­hy by Prasannaji­th Abeysuriya, lighting by Gamini Wanniarach­chi, stage props by Ranjith Premathila­ka and Indika Ramanayaka and the revolving stage by Kelum Jayasinghe.

Technical advice is by W. A. Shantha Kumara and Kirthi Gunawarden­a. Tickets are at the Theatre gate and the play is organized by Jude Srimal.
