Draw out plan to complete lessons this year says Ed. Minister

-

Education Minister Ramesh Pathirana has called on education authorities to draw out a plan to complete the syllabuses during this year.

The directive was given during a meeting with officials from the Education Ministry, Examinations Department, National Institute of Education and other institutions.

The move came as there were only 139 school days in contrast to the 180 days which should be in place.

Instructions were also given to the Examinations Department to ensure that the examinations papers are prepared to ensure that students are not affected due to the non-completion of syllabuses.

Dr. Pathirana said steps should be taken to ensure that the completion of syllabuses will not be carried on to next year.

Due to the closure of schools last year some syllabuses were not completed and as a result they were completed in the first few months of this year.

However, this year too, academic activities have been affected due to the non-availability of fuel and due to strikes.

On Thursday, more than 90 per cent of school education was affected due to the general strike that was launched that day.

In some of the schools no teachers or students had reported while in some schools though few students turned up there was no academic activities, trade union representatives said.

Tomorrow also has been declared as a public holiday depriving students of another school day.
