Story of a stamp

-

Haveyou ever collected stamps? you ever wondered about the story behind them?

Sir Rowland Hill of England was the person who came up with the idea of the stamp. Early stamps were made by a rubber hand-stamp and ink. It was done to simplify the postal system. world was the ‘Penny Black’.

Every stamp has a picture on it and every picture carries a story.

This is the story of a Sri Lankan stamp issued in 1995. The value of it is 1 rupee. The stamp shows one of the oldest maps of Sri Lanka.

The map was done 700 years back, in 1378. It was made by Ptolemy.

Ptolemy was a Roman astronomer and a mathematician. He wanted to make a world map, but there

were no computers or satellites 700 years ago.

So, he collected information from sailors. It was very to complete. In his map also.
