Tame draw at Moratuwa; Ananda sniffing victory

-

After a poor show in the first half, St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa amended their approach with a better performance, while Trinity College dominated from all aspects in their drawn Inter-School Under-19 two-day cricket match, which ended at Moratuwa yesterday.

After trailing by 105 runs after the first innings, St. Sebastian's were 223 for the loss of eight wickets before the game came to an end on the second day. Nilash Perera played a resilient knock of 56 for the hosts, but the limelight was on left-arm spinner Theeraka Ranatunga, who claimed a five-fer.

Trinity responded well, by posting 303 runs in their first innings while the hosts were skittled out for 198 after being put into bat. Ranuda Somaratne played a commanding knock, contributing with 150 for Trinity, while Kesara Madusha stood out for St. Sebastian's with a knock of 82.

At Ananda Mawatha, hosts Ananda College gained the upper hand against Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala in their two-day game which began yesterday. Electing to bat first, Ananda were restricted to 175 inside 48 overs, but the Devans could not enjoy their feat for long, as they were shot out for a paltry total of 78 in just 20 over.

Left-arm seamer Tehan Perera spearheaded the Ananda bowling attack claiming five wickets while Hansaja Jayasinghe top scored for the hosts with 55. Earlier on the day, Devan Sakindu Wijeratne claimed a five-fer. The match stands in favour of the hosts, with a day to go.
