‘Single Tumbler’ goes to the UK

-

Sivamohan Sumathy’s award winning movie ‘Single Tumbler’ will be screened at the UK Asian Film Festival on May 11 and 12.

The film will be screened at 6 pm on May 11 at Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry while on May 12 it will be screened at Rich Mix, Bethnal Green.

An intimate portrayal of northern Tamil society in Sri Lanka, the film looks back at violent histories. The war between the Sri Lankan armed forces and the Tamil separatist group, the Tigers, is over but deep scars remain. Lalitha returns to Sri Lanka, to her war torn country and the family she left behind in a time of great turbulence. Secrets are being kept about wartime that Lalitha must find answers to.

In ‘Single Tumbler’ writer-director Sumathy Sivamohan casts a poetic lens on the conflict with resounding effect.

The cast include Nirmala Rajasingam, Sharmini Masilamani, Miriam Navaneendran, Suman Loganathan, Jenoshan Jeyaratnam and Ahalya David.

The film earlier won the Best International Film at the Cinemaking International Film festival in Dhaka.

“The Single Tumbler is an inward glance; a close intimate glance at northern Tamil society in Sri Lanka, at a time of crisis of identity. It is driven from within by its class, gender and ethnic persuasions. I look at my own home, family, community and nation, through the lens of displacement. I look at post war Sri Lanka, haunted by its past. Tamils suffered in the war, but they were also complicit in turning a blind eye to injustices committed in their name. This is a sensitive issue. One needs to tackle this without judgement,” said director Sivamohan talking about the film.
