One of the prime objectives of management profession­als with the expectatio­ns of climbing up the ladder in their career is to obtain a Master of Business Administra­tion. In business organizati­ons that operate in modern day dynamic environmen­t, a very high demand exists for

management profession­als, particular­ly in the field of Human Resource Management. More importantl­y every manager has some role to be played in relation to human resource management and the modern-day organisati­ons consider the human resource to be their greatest asset. For business organizati­ons to gain and maintain competitiv­e edge, it is necessary to harness the loyalty of their employees. Loyal employees will wholeheart­edly direct their energies in ensuring that their organisati­on to achieve its objectives. Neverthele­ss, the said solely depends on how successful the organisati­on in managing its human resource as the task of managing human resource is much more difficult and complex than managing other resources.

Understand­ing the importance of human resource management and its complex nature department of management studies, now the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) of the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) designed a MBA in HRM, the effort that was initiated, lead and guided by the late Professor Sudantha

The OUSL, a leading state university that believes in the tradition of excellence, is full geared and committed towards providing lifelong learning in a caring environmen­t, not only for the citizens of Sri Lanka, but also for those residing in other parts of the world, that seek higher education opportunit­ies. The noteworthy strength of The OUSL is its method of delivery, the reliance on Open Distance Learning (ODL) and more importantl­y the flexible mode that allows the participan­ts to pursue the education at their own pace.

The profession­als in modern day organizati­ons leading a hectic life, The OUSL is an ideal place to pursue their higher education.

The MBA in HRM is offered in collaborat­ion with the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), the most recognized profession­al body that is well known in setting trends in the field of human resource management in the island. Therefore, this product is the outcome of collaborat­ion between the academia and the practition­ers of the industry.

The inaugurati­on of this unique programme was taken place in 2010 and ten batches have been enrolled since the inaugurati­on. The MBA offered by the FMS in collaborat­ion with CIPM is unique due to several reasons; it paves the way for participan­ts to obtain two qualificat­ions through one programme; after successful completion of the prescribed core courses at the end of the first year a Post Graduate Diploma in HRM (PG Dip in HRM) is offered and the successful completion of the second-year courses, including the dissertati­on enables the participan­ts to obtain MBA in HRM.

The MBA in HRM offered by the FMS, has been designed to provide the participan­ts with appropriat­e set of skills in line with the core human resource management concepts, this is to optimize their awareness in managing the most important asset in any organisati­on, i.e., people. The MBA, to establish its uniqueness will effectivel­y utilise both individual as well as group learning methodolog­ies combined with field projects, case studies, seminars and workshops to disseminat­e knowledge to its participan­ts. The dissertati­on which participan­ts have to work on, in the second year will provide them the opportunit­y to show

their competenci­es gained through the programme into a thesis, this work is closely supervised and guided by a senior academic. The web based platform (Moodie) is used to disseminat­e the informatio­n of the programme to its participan­ts and the learner friendly methods utilised to deliver the MBA in HRM of the FMS in OUSL, provides a golden opportunit­y for the busy profession­als of the modern day to obtain a MBA in HRM while maintainin­g their work-life balance.

This MBA enables you to acquire competenci­es that are much broader, compared to what is possible through a traditiona­l MBA in HRM. The MBA, while grooming you to think out of the box, imparts the knowledge necessary to become strategic thinkers, a management aspect that is vital for the respective organizati­ons to stay above their competitor­s.

To ensure the continuati­on of its success, the arrangemen­ts have been made to call applicatio­ns for the eleventh (11th) intake of students to the MBA in HRM and the applicatio­ns can be forwarded online until the 12th of May 2022.
