Brightly College Open Day sheds light on its revolutionary STEAM+ approach: leads the vital realignment of Sri Lanka’s education philosophy starting with A Levels

-

In March 2022, the launch of Brightly College signified a ground-breaking transformation in the education landscape of Sri Lanka, where the pioneering academic institution pledged to introduce to the country a visionary pedagogical model - one that educates and hones resilient, goal- oriented young men and women of tomorrow.

What Brightly College offers is a future- forward learning culture rooted in time-tested foundations; where contemporary fields of study are taught alongside more traditional subjects. Where progressive life skills merge seamlessly with academic principles of discipline, perseverance, and integrity. Where diversity and opportunity work hand-in-hand in tune to the fast-evolving career landscape.

Brightly College students will be given the opportunity to study Cambridge Inter nat i o n a l - accredited A Level subjects pertinent to the expectations of our changing world – the likes of Marine Science, Drama, Digital Media & Design, etc.- as well as the standard subjects – Physics, Mathemat i c s, I n format i o n Technology, etc.- already offered by Sri Lankan schools. What differentiates Brightly College from other schools however, is its progressive curricula irrespective of the subjects of choice.

For Brightly College employs a novel STEAM+ educational approach to learning: i.e., Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, and the ‘+’denoting crucial vocational and life skills. In addition to the superior academic content offering, key non-academic skills ( such as Creativity & Innovation, Critical Thinking, Communication Skills, Problem Solving & Risk- Taking, Time &

Stress Management, Leadership & Teamwork, Empathy & Sensitivity, and Entrepreneurship) are also incorporated into students’ multidisciplinary learning. In assimilating vital real world life skills with course study, on graduation, school students at Brightly College will be armed with the significant advantage of having developed resilience, critical perspectives, and the knowledge of how to apply their skills and learning to real world problems.

Students enrolling at Brightly College can choose subjects from non- conventional and predefined “streams” encouraging students to follow a balanced curriculum rather than forcing them into opting for a particular narrow subject stream as is the most common case. A maximum of four subjects can be chosen and a stimulating mix of local and international expert teachers engaging both remotely and in person will be accessible to all students at Brightly College. The duration of study will be 30 weeks per year, as with a typical A Level programme.

The curriculum and delivery mode at Brightly College is designed to not just educate young minds with subject content, but to also encourage engagement with concepts, theories, and ideas, so that students are inspired by the world around them and look forward to a schooling experience that is actually enjoyable.

Although a progressive education institution at heart, Brightly College also acknowledges the cultural gravitas of the Sri Lanka’s learning ecosystem. As a result, learning here is flexible and progressive in terms of delivery model and subject choices.

At the helm of the institution as its Founding Principal, is Cambridge University alumnus and passionate educator, Andrew Fowler-Watt. Former Principal of Trinity College (ranked #1 School in Sri Lanka during his tenure), and previously The British School in Colombo, and the Colombo International School, Andrew alone has made a transformational impact on the education landscape of Sri Lanka.

The Director of Innovation &

Learning at Brightly College is education reformer and visionary, Tom Cassidy. An Oxford University graduate with a deep understanding of both pedagogic practice and leadership, Tom has developed teacher-training frameworks that have been used by over 20,000 teachers worldwide; with years of personal teaching experience across the globe under his belt.

Conveniently located at the iconic Colombo Innovation Tower (CIT), students of Brightly College will have access to a stimulating ecosystem of innovation, and many an opportunity to rub shoulders with a vibrant community of inspiring change- makers. From modernised lecture rooms to dynamic collaborative spaces where both learning and creativity take place, Brightly College also comes physically equipped to develop, support, and launch confident young minds into their successful futures.

The school looks forward to opening its doors to its inaugural batch of dedicated A Level students for its first intake in September 2022, but is also still welcoming applications for its two- week Summer Accelerated Learning Programme which begins July 4th.

Brightly College invites students who have completed their O Levels (and their parents) to learn more about the uniquely enriching learning experience the school has to offer, and the
