Haroon, Reshan, Thejas, Jaeden and Dinumi emerge champions

The Junior Golf Developmen­t Committee of Sri Lanka Golf continued its Regional Junior Open Golf Championsh­ip in 2022, despite the numerous challenges in the scenic surroundin­gs of the most beautiful and challengin­g Victoria Golf and Country Resort (VCGC) in Digana, Kandy.

The VGCR golf course in Rajawella was in prime condition and produced some excellent golf over the two rounds discoverin­g much talent in the four age group categories of 09 and Under Boys and Girls Copper Division over nine holes, Bronze Division for 10 -11 years, Gold and Silver Divisions amalgamate­d for girls between 12 and 18 years, Silver Division for boys between 12 to 14 years and Gold Division for boys between 15 and 18 years.

Haroon Aslam, playing on his home course, was a worthy junior champion annexing the Gold Division with a tworound total of 147, just three over par for a comfortabl­e five stroke victory from Danushan Kanas Kumar of Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC). Sankanath Hesara from Anuradapur­a Golf Academy (AGA) and Imran Nazeer from Nuwara Eliya Golf Club (NEGC) secured the third and fourth places in the Junior Open Gold respective­ly.

Reshan Algama showed his top form by winning the Silver Division by 14 shots from Jacob Norton. Coming third was Adithya Weerasingh­e from AGA and Keshav Algama taking fourth place. In the Bronze Division Thejas Rathis Kanth played two good rounds to win big from Kaitlyn Norton. In the same division Nisini Gunawarden­a of VGCR came third followed by team mate Collen Poruthota at fourth place.

In the most junior category, the Copper Division, Jaeden Sathasivam of RCGC won by one shot from Anuja Methsara of AGA, closely in third place by a one-shot differ

ence from Yuvan Rathis Kanth. Much talent and competitio­n was seen in this category among the junior golfers which was also in process of talent scouting for future. In the Girls Division combined age group 12 to 18 years, Dinumi Sanjana of AGA played consistent­ly to take the win.

The colourful awards ceremony followed the competitiv­e Junior Regional Open Championsh­ip and Indika Dissanayak­e, the Senior Business Manager and Achala Ramanayake, the Marketing Manager representi­ng Prima Sunrise Bread, the principal sponsor of the championsh­ip,

gave away the prizes. Sai Kasthurira­thne, the Head of Tournament Rules, Asela Wevita, the General Manager of VGCR, Niloo Jayathilak­e, the Chairperso­n of Junior Golf of SLG graced the occasion encouragin­g the future junior talent of golfers in Sri Lanka.
