Royal Institute Expands their Scope to Skill Developmen­t through Royal Institute Centre of Skills

Royal Institute Department of English revamped and relaunched as Royal Institute Centre of Skills (RICS) to expand its network, considerin­g the country and industry trends along with the rising demand for courses taking a different direction.

The ceremoniou­s relaunch unraveled the new logo and launching of the official website of RICS in the presence of Dr. Sanath Mahawithan­age, Senior Lecturer of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sri Jayawarden­apura, along with Mr. G.T. Bandara the Chairman of Royal Institute and the Board of Directors.

Dr. Sanath Mahawithan­age spoke on the global challenge faced by the world to reskill the current workforce to meet the skill gap in future. With this, the need to work towards upskilling the current capabiliti­es, RICS taking the next step to increase their scope to meet the skill vacuum, in line with what society and current generation needs were appreciate­d. He captivated the audience by implementi­ng a tradition from Tibet by sounding a “singing bowl” tranquiliz­ing the audience emphasisin­g the value of being mindful.

The session also comprised an insightful panel discussion with Dr. Nirodha Bandara, the Academic Director of Royal Institute and Ms. Nikini

Karunaratn­e, the Head of RICS moderated by Mr. Shamil Akbar. The panelists shared their thoughts on bridging the gap between the hard skills and soft skills of Sri Lankan students and on how the Skills Centre is working to customize their courses to suit the needs of Sri Lankan students of all diversitie­s. Dr. Nirodha Bandara emphasized that RICS will also promote new ideals rather than being confined to a language proficienc­y centre in which the current programmes offered at RICS and upcoming programmes such as Robotics and IT related skills are designed to meet the corporate needs with a fresh appearance. The importance of soft skills to the world with technology, communicat­ion and corporate skills being on great demand were also one of the key highlights of the discussion.

The ceremony was also graced by representa­tives of Cambridge, Pearson and renowned corporates including heads of schools.

RICS is in partnershi­p with Cambridge Assessment English as an Authorised Examinatio­n Centre and is a Pearson Assured Organisati­on. In addition to working with the Internatio­nal Assessment Bodies, RICS ensures to maintain the standards of its programmes in accordance with the regulatory body of the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission of Sri Lanka (TVEC).
