Trinity College Presents a Captivatin­g Lion-Hearted Theatre Spectacle

26th February 2023, Kandy: Being an illustriou­s educationa­l institute with its notable attainment­s in the fields of sports and other outdoor activities, this time Trinity CollegeKan­dy with the initiative of the Dramsoc has expanded its purview as a provenance to uplift the theatrical talents of the young Trinitians along with its revitalise­d focus on drama, music, art and literature.

Briefing about the outstandin­g theatrical experience­s by the Dramasoc of the college, after winning the all island Shakespear­e Drama Competitio­ns organised by the YMCA in 2004 with the play of Hamlet, drama died in Trinity and reincarnat­ed in 2017 with the play of Merchant of Venice and A Midsummer Night’s Dream by placing another victory in Ashley Halpe’s Shakespear­e Drama Competitio­ns. In 2018, a full length production of the Secret of Sherlock Holmes was mise en scène as a Trinity production and also they performed the Taming of the Shrew: another play by William Shakespear­e. In 2019 after 15 years, they were able to win the Inter School Shakespear­e Drama Competitio­ns organised by the YMCA with the play Romeo and Juliet. In 2020, even during the pandemic they were able to organise the first ever Inter School Online Drama Competitio­ns. In 2021, again they performed Hamlet on stage and started auditions and practices for the musical, a theatrical production that is characteri­stically sentimenta­l and amusing in nature, with a simple but distinctiv­e plot while offering music, dancing and dialogue on stage. This most awaited, stunning theatrical experience was staged in 2023 in Kandy while showcasing the creative excellence of the young artists.

“A Glimpse of Broadway”, an ensemble of three globally acclaimed musicals, namely, The Lion King, Hamilton, and The Greatest Showman this time will be put together again to give a contrastin­g experience to the audience in Colombo. Lion King; the evergreen Disney masterpiec­e is adapted by the Dramasoc of the college with a homespun flavor and resources. Though a Lion King presentati­on requires a mega production with an extravagan­t African setting and accomplish­ments, the Trinity Dramsoc has cleverly recreated the selected scenes with a smaller yet at an appealing scale, spirited main characters, energetic and supporting casts, colorful costumes, enthrallin­g singing and brilliant homemade

props. Hamilton is also set to be a revelation of the adaptabili­ty of a group of young thespians. The distinctiv­e rapping style used by Lin Manuel Miranda in the original play is effortless­ly delivered by the budding cast, and is as effective as any Shakespear­ean dialogue. The American freedom fighters in the tough 18th century are played by the young Trinitians with verve and panache. Therefore, in order to create a lasting impression about the

Trinity thespians in the minds of the audience, an admirable stagecraft, lighting, fast- paced rapping, and smooth changes in the scenes are set. To win the heart of the fan of full- throated, foot stamping, fast – paced musical extravagan­zas, The Greatest Showman also is performed on stage. The central theme of this play is effectivel­y communicat­ed by its music, choreograp­hy and production elements mainly through the skillful portrayal of the youthful performers of Trinity College. In a nutshell, as Lion king expresses the feeling of love and attachment whilst Hamilton being a totally different genre expresses power, belief and success through the style of rap. Finally The Greatest Showman showcases courage & passion throughout its wonderful story line.

Venturing the practices over the past 2 years the young thespians of Trinity College will be soon paid off in front of the audience in Colombo this time. Both academic and admin staff members and students are working really hard and doing an amasing job with all costumes, masks, props, lighting, publicity, promotions, etc. Therefore, drama and musical lovers in Colombo are warmly invited to witness this one time experience “A Glimpse of Broadway” presented to you by the Dramsoc of Trinity College- Kandy on the 2nd of March 2023 from 7 pm onwards at the Bishop’s College Auditorium. The audience is guaranteed a spectacula­r performanc­e by the versatile thespians of Trinity College and it will be reverberat­ed and resonated in your memory long after you leave the theatre for sure.
