Twenty Five years of ‘Down Memory Lane’

- By Sanath Weerasuriya

‘Down Memory Lane’, Sri Lanka’s pioneering and premier singalong of ‘golden oldies’ is back on track. After an inevitable lapse of over four long years due to the pandemic and Easter attack in 2019, music lovers are in for a celebration treat as Moratuwa Arts Forum (MAF) prepares to present the forthcoming ‘Down Memory Lane’ Concert as their Silver Jubilee singalong programme.

The inaugural ‘Down Memory Lane’ (DML) programme was held in 1997 and eighteen sing-along concerts have been held ever since. ‘Down Memory Lane’ is the trailblazer singalong and the longest running series of concerts in Sri Lanka.

‘We are happy that our pioneering effort had triggered the now popular trend of ‘sing-alongs’ with audience participation’ said veteran musician Priya Peiris of La Bambas fame and the creator of the DML concept for the Moratuwa Arts Forum.

Two former MAF Presidents, Sarath Goonawardene and Brian Coorey – both well known musicians, will be co-Chairmen for this landmark celebration programme.

Melantha Perera of ‘Mirage’ fame, the current President of Moratuwa Arts Forum, is very optimistic about this year’s show and invites all singalong lovers to come with family and friends for an evening full of fellowship, fun and unlimited camaraderie.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, 29th April to be held at Grand Bolgoda Resort, located in the Moratuwa city center.

As customary, the star studded galaxy of singers from the Forum (MAF singers) will come up on stage to spur and urge the audience to sing, sing and sing to their hearts content at this Two and half hour show.

As always, a songbook will be provided to each participant and the singalong repertoire will comprise endearing vintage favorites and oldies familiar to everyone, including much loved Sinhala evergreens.

Arun Dias Bandaranaike will be the Master of Ceremonies at this event. This year’s programme being of special significance is expected to attract a full house òf sing-along enthusiast.

‘So keep the date free to come along with your crowd, for the 2-1/2 hour programme unlimited camaraderie and fun, and to sing, sing and sing’ said Priya.
