High profile speakers, experts to attend National Law Conference

The National Law Conference 2023 on the theme “Navigating through Crisis: The Law’s Role” is set to take place on March 12 and 13 at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo.

The conference will feature several highprofil­e speakers, including Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and United States Ambassador Julie Chung. The conference is being chaired by Janaprith Fernando, Attorney-at-Law and chairman of the National Law Conference 2023.

The conference will be divided into several plenary sessions, each of which will focus on a specific aspect of the law’s role in navigating through crisis.

The plenary sessions will discuss topics such as “The crisis, the legal framework and its role in economic recovery,” “Investment in times of crisis, the legal framework and new developmen­ts and opportunit­ies,” “Addressing violence and social exclusion in times of crisis,” "Taxation in the context of recent reforms," and "New developmen­ts in Civil Law and the Notarial Practice."

Experts who will be taking part in the plenary sessions include Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasingh­e, Assistant Central Bank Governor Sirikumar Kudagama, Board of Investment Director General Renuka Weerakone, Inland Revenue Commission­er General Ranjith Hapuarachc­hi, Labour Commission­er General B. K. Prabath Chandrakee­rthi and Labour Tribunal President Sudantha Ranasinghe.

Also taking part will be Supreme Court Justices Murdhu Fernando, Yasantha Kodagoda and Arjuna Obeysekera.

The conference will also feature panel discussion­s, Q&A sessions and networking opportunit­ies, which will enable the attendees to engage with experts and discuss the topics covered in more detail.
