Abans and LG join forces to support environmental conservation through the Green Isle initiative in partnership

-

Five years ago, Abans partnered with the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) and the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) to kickstart the “Green Isle” initiative within the Bellanwila-Attidiya Sanctuary. As a pivotal component of their “LG Loves Green Sri Lanka” campaign, this CSR endeavour aimed to bolster sustainable practices in Sri Lanka.

The project specifically targeted in improving quality of life for people and wildlife, envisioning the region as a crucial “green lung” for the urban city limits by helping absorb greenhouse gasses which are harmful to the environment. Buddhika Dharmawardena, Director Operations at Abans PLC, emphasised the importance of corporate engagement in conservation efforts, aligning Abans’ commitment with LG’s passion for environmental stewardship. Collaborating with WNPS and DWC, this innovative project seeks to reverse past environmental damages through a systematic approach.

Abans and LG prioritised addressing habitat loss, identified as a significant threat to Sri Lanka’s unique biodiversity. The initiative also aimed to raise awareness about the delicate ecological balance necessary for wildlife and local communities to thrive.

Key actions included a substantial tree replanting programme under scientific guidance to replace invasive species, the restoration of small canals, and the removal of weeds and debris.
