Tourism Authority names 60-plus hotel operators in licensing crackdown

The Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) is taking some tough actions to get hotels across the country to toe the line when it comes to the regulation­s.

Tuesday , the authority in an advertisem­ent published in the state-owned Guyana Chronicle, listed more than 60 hotels in the three regions which they say must contact them before month-end over registrati­on issues. GTA explained that all tourism businesses must register with the entity. These included hotels, guest houses, lodges, resorts, inns, apartments, tour operators and tourist guides. “The Tourism Regulation­s also requires that all tourism businesses must obtain a license to operate from the authority in accordance to the regulation­s made under the Guyana Tourism Act 2002.” The regulation­s include the Tourism Accommodat­ion Establishm­ents Regulation­s No. 16 of 2008; Interior Lodges and Resorts Regulation­s No.1 of 2008; Tour Operators Regulation­s No. 17 of 2008 and Tourist Guides Regulation­s No. 18 of 2008. In Demerara, the advertisem­ents listed 36 hotels, guest houses, inns and apartments that have to get themselves in order and make contact with GTA before month-end. These include a number of Brazilian hotels like Rockies, Hotel Brazil and Hotel Marinho, and Alpha, C Island Hotel, Hilton Crest and Paradise Inn. In Essequibo, three hotels were named- Caribbean Heat Hotel, Traveller’s Lodge and Comfort Inn. In Berbice, nine hotels include Parkway, Astor, Berbice Inn and First Impression Hotel were listed. At Linden, the three businesses named – Riverview Internatio­nal, Quality Inn and Linden Guest House – have to get their affairs in order. At Bartica, Diamond Castle, Platinum, Morocco Internatio­nal, 7th Avenue Hotel and Sherill’s Inn and At Home Guest House were the six named in the advertisem­ent.
