Operation Octopuss will be evaluated

Police Chief Guno Roosenhoff told Times of Suriname that the operation was carried out for six weeks before officials decided to evaluate it. The officials will take a look at the results of the evaluation before determinin­g if the operation will be resumed.

Roosenhoff pointed out that Octopuss was carried out by the Police Force Suriname (KPS) in associatio­n with the National Security Bureau. He called the operation a successful one that was carried out by the police and the army. He also pointed out that almost no robberies were registered during the operation.

Operation Octupuss was carried out in the districts Paramaribo, Wanica and Commewijne. The main objective was to tackle brutal crime and traffic crime. Operation Octupuss also focused on evicting youths from the streets.

Roosenhoff pointed out that Operation Octupuss was preventive and repressive in nature. Those who were caught selling drugs or in being in possession of drugs were apprehende­d.

Traffic violators were also given fines. At the start of the operation people filed complaints for having been treated rudely. Officials had a talk with the police and army units in response to the complaints. The joint units also had to attend a short briefing session before patrolling the streets.
