Suspect confesses to being with gang that killed bus driver

A Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara man has reportedly confessed to being part of a three-man gang that killed minibus driver, Tedroy Neil James, near Mc Doom on Tuesday.

Kaieteur News understands that the suspect, who was detained on the very day of the killing, has told investigators that he was involved in the planning of the robbery and was also present when James was shot dead. However, he denied being the shooter. Police are likely to seek legal advice today, and indications are that the detained man, who is in his twenties, will be charged. “The suspect in the bus driver murder is in custody investigators have established a strong case against him,” a senior police official told Kaieteur News yesterday. “However, because of the prevailing situation, the police will be asking for an extension of his detention period. “Two others suspects are wanted, but despite searches at their respective places of abode, they weren’t located.” James, 38, of Suddie, Essequibo, was shot in the back while attempting to drive away after two bandits, who were posing as passengers, began robbing other commuters.

The Route-32 driver was heading north along the East Bank Demerara Public Road, when a male passenger, whom he had picked up on the West Coast Demerara, asked to stop at Middle Street, Mc Doom. But as the passenger was about to disembark, two other men, one armed with a handgun, began to rob the other passengers. James, upon noticing the ruckus, attempted to drive away, but was shot by one of the bandits. The suspects then scaled a median before running into a nearby street. Public-spirited citizens subsequently took James to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police have refuted earlier reports that two brothers from Agricola were held for the killing. The brothers were in fact held for another incident on East Coast Demerara.
