Chinese entrepreneurs to be accommodated at South Market
As part of the integration and cooperation policy, Chinese entrepreneurs will also be accommodated at the South Market. Paramaribo North East District Commissioner Mike Nerkust on Wednesday reportedly talked to representatives from the Chinese embassy, the Suriname Youth Federation and the vendors. DC Nerkust pointed out that there are many empty stalls at the market and that these stalls will be allocated to Chinese entrepreneurs. This development will help to turn the market into a reflection of Surinamese society as each ethnic group will sell its products while promoting part of its culture. DC Nerkust thanked the Chinese embassy and the organization for their support. “It tells me that we have chosen the right path”, said DC Nerkust.
The vendors have asked questions regarding the facilities at the market, the security measures and the parking space. The DC explained to them that the market has been around for a long time and that all of the facilities are already in place. The DC also assured the vendors that they do not have to worry about security. A security firm has reportedly been tasked with keeping an eye on things at the South Market. Officials will also create parking space. Xiao Yan Jian, representative from the Chinese embassy, expressed gratitude for the DC’s support and for making it possible for Surinamese Chinese to do business at the market. The organization and the Chinese embassy are eager to help the government to improve the economy and to help the Chinese community to further adapt to their surroundings in Suriname.
