GLO final exams: Nickerie once again has best results

For the fifth consecutiv­e year the Nickerie District has the highest pass rate for the final exams for primary schools (GLO). Statistics from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (MinOWC) indicate that 542 6th graders took the final exams and that 413 students or 76.2% qualified for the secondary education junior level (Mulo). 12 students or 2.21% qualified for lower vocational education (lbo) while 70 students or 12.92% failed the final exams. Nickerie has a pass rate of 78.41% this year. Statistics also indicate that 11,031 students took the final exams nationwide. 6,427 students or 56.63% qualified for the Mulo while 470 or 4.22% qualified for lbo. 2,146 students reportedly failed the final exams nationwide. The Commewijne District came in second with a pass rate of 74.04%.

The Paramaribo District had the highest number of exam candidates namely 4,553. 2,729 students or 59.94% qualified for Mulo; 181 or 3.98% for lbo and 747 students or 16.41% must redo the sixth grade.

The districts Para and Brokopondo each have a pass rate of 49% this year.

The Sipaliwini District reportedly has the lowest pass rate namely 37%. 794 students from the Sipaliwini District took the final exams but only 244 qualified for the Mulo and 48 for lbo. 191 students (20.28%) will have to redo the sixth grade and retake the final exams next year. Statistics indicate that the pass rate for GLO was 56% last year.
