First lady urges Surinamese people to remain positive
First lady Ingrid BouterseWaldring who on Thursday held the annual Christmas party for the nation’s senior citizens urged the Surinamese people to remain positive. While the senior citizens enjoyed the celebrations in the garden of the Presidential Palace, the first lady pointed out that she deemed it regrettable that so much negativity is being spread on social media. She pointed out that people could also start posting positive messages and comments on social media. “There is always love and unity in Suriname. Please let it stay that way,” said First Lady WaldringBouterse who urged fellow citizens to show each other extra love this month and to try to solve their problems in a peaceful manner. “Let’s spread the love in our neighborhood. When somebody does not have any food, please give them something to eat,” said the first lady.
108-year-old Betsy Lemmers and her son who are both senior citizens were also at this year’s annual Christmas party for senior citizens. They pointed out that they attend every party and that they enjoy being given the opportunity to be a part of this event. Thea Mehciz applauded the first lady for making sure that senior citizens are escorted to their seats. The old lady has difficulty walking and appreciated the fact that she received help when she arrived at the gate of the Presidential Palace. “This is the second time that I am attending the event,” said the woman who pointed out that it is always well-organized. Local artists such as Brayen Muntslag and Annemarie Sanchez appeared on stage. A youth choir and Bishop Steve Meye also appeared on stage.
The members of a Chinese women’s association entertained the audience with their dancing skills. All of the guests left the party with fond memories and a Christmas parcel.
Reports indicate that 1,100 senior citizens had been invited to this year’s annual Christmas party. The first lady thanked all of the sponsors for supporting this project. She also gave special thanks to the Indian embassy that gave its approval to all of her 4 projects including the senior citizens’ project and that also helped finance the projects. No money from the treasury was spent on the celebrations.
