People who visit Waterkant can once again feel safe because the police force has decided to have police units patrol this tourist attraction on a permanent basis.

Acting Minister of Justice and Police Minister Ferdinand Welzijn explained that beggars, homeless people and petty thieves are creating much nuisance. Reports indicate that visitors have been molested at Waterkant. “Each molestatio­n case is one too many,” said Minister Welzijn. “Petty thieves who occasional­ly target the visitors must also be tackled. People who visit this location are bothered by beggars or homeless people on a daily basis. The city police will be instructed to deploy units at the location so that visitors and especially the tourists can enjoy themselves without having to being afraid of being bothered.” The minister added that officials are also focusing on an illegal building that is being constructe­d along the Waterkant. The entreprene­ur who is having the building constructe­d does not have permission from the district commission­er and the Management Council. He has already been urged to stop all constructi­on activities. Welzijn who is the minister of Trade and Industry pointed out that officials are addressing the security issue but that they also want to embellish this location. Another entreprene­ur reportedly wants to deploy a mobile ice-cream parlor and a playground at the Waterkant.
