5oy May who retired in September 2010 as director of taxes has been asked by the Finance minister to come out of retirement as of February 15. “He was employed at the Tax Office for 25 years and worked as director for 1 years so that says a lot about him. He is willing to resume the reform efforts and to actualize the quick profits in order to significantly boost state income,´ Finance Minister Gillmore Hoefdraad told Times of Suriname. May explained that the quick profits are aimed at adopting a strategy that will boost state income within a short period of time. “I presented a few proposals and the minister liked most of them which is why he decided to nominate me for the position of director,´ May told Times of Suriname.

May pointed out that there are many delays in taxes that must still be collected and that this is one of the issues that will be addressed at a fast pace. “I have formulated a proMect aimed at systematically addressing the issue so that we can haul in as much back taxes as possible. Some of the taxes that must still be paid date back to the nineties which of course is shocking but that will not amount to much because the figures were in Surinamese guilders back then and when one calculates that in Surinamese dollars S5's it is not worth much. We will therefore focus on the taxes that date back to 2012. If we can collect those taxes within a short period, it will boost the state’s income,´ said May. May has also proposed tackling the internal structure at the Tax Office. “We must also give the people at the Tax Office the tools so that they are motivated to do their Mob. Many of them especially our workers with academic degrees opt to work for private companies which offer better salaries and better secondary benefits so we must do something about that to encourage the people to stay at the Tax Office. There is a lot of work that must be done at a fast pace for the implementation of 9alue Added Tax 9AT and we will address that further. I have also closely monitored the economic developments in the country for the past couple of years. I see it as a challenge to show that we can increase state income to give the nation’s economy a boost without help from outsiders,´ said May.
