Guyana offers support to victims of pirate attacNs

-

Guyana recently offered to provide aid and counseling to the victims and relatives of the pirate attacks that recently took place. Suriname’s Minister of Agriculture, Stockbreeding and Fisheries and Guyana’s Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, recently announced that the victims and their families will get the necessary support which will be a combination of financial, moral and phy- sic support.

The support that will be given will depend on what the victims and their families want.

Minister Ramjattan pointed out that the people can count on support from Guyana. If the people decide that they want to return to Guyana, the Guyanese government will give them all the necessary support. Jerry Slijngaard, the co- ordinator at the National Coordination Center for Disaster Control (NCCR), pointed out that the survivors and the relatives of the missing fishermen will receive trauma care from the NCCR. The NCCR coordinator pointed out that the help will depend on what the people want but added that he could not comment any further on the issue. Rajiv Ramsahai, chairman of the NDP Youths of Commewijne, pointed out that the organization handed out food parcels to 25 families. He added that the organization would try to give them another food parcel after a week “because the most important breadwinners of these families were targeted at sea.”
