The Ministry of 6ocial Protection, through the *uyana :omen /eadership ,nstitute, recently laid the platform for women empowerment in 5egion Two, following a two-day workshop on local government for :omen. 5epresentative of The *uyana :omen /eadership institute, Tricia :atson, said that the institute is geared at empowering women across the various regions in *uyana.
The workshop which was hosted in the %oard 5oom of the 5egional Democratic Council last Thursday and )riday, was attended by some women from different designations within the 5egion. The women were empowered under four key areas laws of local government, leadership, organi]ational skills and team building. The aim of the workshop, however, was to provide women wanting to be part of local *overnment, with the resources and skills needed to be leaders.
The workshop was opened up not Must for women who wanted to be part of local government, but also persons who wanted to make a change within their communities.
8shering in the workshop was Minister within the Ministry of Public ,nfrastructure, Annette )erguson who, during her opening speech, urged the women to be bold in taking up the responsibilities of leaders within their respective communities.
³, say to you that if you look within yourself, you would see that you have what it takes to become a leader in your own communities« to represent those who are fearful in coming forward.” Tricia :atson noted that prior to 1 , few women were knowledgeable about local government elections. 6he added, however, ³because we want women to be part of their community development, we think that we should empower women, we should create the platform for them to be empowered so that they can be a part of local government and community work«. ,f you don’t know something then you can’t be a part of it.”
As the workshop unfolded, quality information on the affairs of local government was dispensed to the women in attendance. The feedback on the other hand was positive.
