Piles being driven for $1.2B water treatment plant at Sheet Anchor

The construction of a water treatment plant at a cost of US$6 M has commenced at Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje Berbice. This was disclosed during a site visit by officials from the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI).

Fourteen thousand residents stretching from No. 19 Public Road to Goed Bananan Land, East Canje is set to benefit from the new development. Riaz Zalil, Project Engineer for GWI explained that construction began in January and some five percent of work is completed thus far with the remainder to be completed by the last quarter in 2019.

“Currently at the sheet anchor water treatment plant we installing piles here right now since the pile design has been approved, pile construction has been completed for the sedimentation filter and the filter tank,” he said.

According to the engineer the inclement weather is one of the major setbacks but they are currently on schedule.

Also, Zalil relayed that residents are being metered for the first time

“The metering has already commenced, we are installing meters right now as we speak, it’s about 70 percent completed and during the metering process also, we noticed that the water pressure has increased due to the conservation by customers in the area,” he added

The Cumberland and Sheet Anchor well will serve the water treatment plant.
