Bouterse gives Dominica PM tour of Central Market
President Desi Bouterse on Tuesday gave the prime minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, a tour of the Central Market located in Paramaribo. The president reportedly wanted to show PM Skerrit the agrarian products that Suriname has to offer. PM Skerrit also got acquainted with the various ethnic groups of Suriname.
PM Skerrit who will reportedly stay in Suriname from June 11 until June 15 is scheduled to visit several districts to get acquainted with the local banana and rice sector. There will also be talks about the cultivation of coconut trees and the processing of coconut oil. The prime minister’s visit is aimed at intensifying bilateral relations between Suriname and Dominica.
The relevant areas that will also be discussed include: agriculture, tourism, trade and construction as well as cooperation in the field of climate change. Also on the agenda is Suriname’s contribution to the reconstruction of Dominica, which was badly hit by Hurricane Maria in 2017. Suriname was one of the first countries in the region to offer relief goods to Dominica.
The district commissioner of Paramaribo North-East, Mike Nerkust, pointed out that the prime minister was content with the visit to the Central Market. “The market vendors were happy. They presented their products. They are also happy that the president gave the prime minister a tour of the Central Market so that he could see what they had to offer,” said DC Nerkust.
