Before his departure from Su-riname, India’s president, Ram Nath Kovind, on Thursday initiated the first groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a cultural center of the Indian embassy in Suriname.
The center will be named the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center and will be constructed at the corner of the Albertlaan and the Jagernath Lachmonstraat. President Kovind and his Surinamese counterpart, Desi Bouterse, also unveiled a placard at the construction site which officially indicates that the construction of the cultural center will commence and that India’s dream of having its own cultural center in Suriname will finally come true. More than 15 years ago the Indian government got the land at the corner of the Albertlaan and the Jagernath Lachmonstraat to construct its own embassy building. But this never happened because whenever India wants to have its own embassy building constructed it must own the rights to the land. The Indian embassy is currently located in a building that is being rented and that is located along the Dr. Sophie Redmondstraat. The Indian Cultural Center (ICC) which has existed in Suriname for over 20 years is located in a rented building along the Mevr. Schneiders Howardstraat available after the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center has been constructed.
