MMC closes up shop
The Mind Console Centrum (MCC) has decided to call it quits. The institution that provided counseling to suicidal people reportedly could not cover the salaries of its employees and other expenses due to a lack of funds. The MCC received a bit of subsidy from the government but it was not enough to stay afloat. “We looked for ways to keep on going but no solution was found,” said Dew Sharman, deputy chairman at the foundation, who added that the organization decided to close up shop permanently because it was financially dependent on the government. “We had to cover the rent of the building, office expenses and the salaries of a couple of employees. The subsidy was given by the government via the National Aids Program,” said Sharman who added that the MCC received a couple of thousands Surinamese dollars on a monthly basis. It also took a while for the MCC to receive the small subsidy while the costs kept increasing. The MCC had not received any money since January so the board decided to shut down all operations.
Sharman deemed
it unfortunate that it came to this because the MCC played an important role in counseling people including those who are infected with HIV. “We have helped hundreds of patients. You know that these clients need much time and attention and sometimes one counselor is not enough.”
