Four students injured in bus accident

-

Four students on Wednesday sustained serious injuries when their bus rammed utility pole before plunging in a ditch. More than ten people, including the driver sustained injuries in the accident that took place along the Kennedyweg near the Coropina Bridge in the Para District around 11:25 a.m. Marvin Moesan, head of the Citizen Information Center, indicated that five ambulances from the RGD and the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) were deployed to rush the injured driver and passengers for observation to the Medical Center Lelydorp. After that the four students were rushed to the Emergency Room at the AZP which is the nation’s biggest hospital. Reports indicate that the bus was going from Zanderij to Rijsdijk. Most of the more than twenty passengers were students. When the bus had reached a road curve the bus veered off the road, rammed a utility pole and plunged in a ditch. It is suspected that the driver was speeding when the accident took place. The driver claims that the steering ball joint malfunctioned and that that is why he lost control over the steering wheel. The police indicated that the bus driver has a valid driver’s license but that it expired a year ago. The driver who failed to file for an extension of his driver’s license was arrested at the scene of the accident and taken to the police station. Moesan pointed out that the district commissioner was the first to arrive on the scene and that he notified the emergency services.
