Traffic accident leaves one dead and four injured

-

36-year-old Wilfred Welcom died in a traffic accident that took place along the Anton Dragtenweg on Sunday morning. The traffic accident also left 4 people with injuries. Inspector Lloyd Tolud, acting regional police chief of Paramaribo, told Times of Suriname that a minivan and a car were involved in a head-on collision.

Welcom who died at the scene of the accident was the driver of the minivan. His body was taken to the Coroner’s Office for an autopsy. Tolud pointed out that a witness claimed that the car was zigzagging on the road. The witness stopped walking and witnessed the driver of his car leaving his side of the road and ramming the minivan that came from the opposite direction. The preliminary police report indicates that 19-yearold Akshayand B (19) was driving along the Anton Dragtenweg and driving in the direction of the David Simonsstraat when his car rammed the minivan of Welcom near building 73. Welcom was the only person sitting in the minivan. According to the police report, Akshayand B most likely suffered a broken leg. The teenager and the three people who were also in his car were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Akshayand B reportedly does not have a driver’s license. Reports indicate that firefighters were called to the scene to get the body of the driver of the minivan out of the wreckage. The minivan was on its head in the driveway of building 73. The owner of building 73 told Times of Suriname that he heard a loud bang on Sunday morning. When he went outside, he saw a minivan in his driveway. He also saw an arm sticking out of the wreckage. He also saw four people sitting in another severely damaged vehicle several meters from his home. The resident pointed out that deadly traffic accidents often take place in the area. “Some people evidently use this street like a race track.”
