Fire Department gives tips for summer vacation

-

The Fire Department Suriname (KBS) recently gave tips for the long dry season and the summer vacation. Fire Department Spokesman Ulrich Coats told Times of Suriname that people must make sure that children do not fly their kites near electric poles. He explained that this could result in power disruptions for households and that it is also dangerous for kids. He also urges parents and adults to make sure that underage children who are home do not play with matches or lighters. “The dry season has officially started. Also pay attention to fans. They attract a lot of dust and must regularly be cleaned because the dust could catch fire due to overheating. Also make sure to check the attic regularly. Bats spend the entire day in the attic and leave a lot of dirt behind. The heat could make things very dangerous,” said Coats who added that everybody should install smoke alarms in their homes. “All rooms except for the kitchen should have a smoke alarm,” said Coats who added that people must also refrain from burning garbage and grass during the dry season. “If people burn garbage or grass after several warnings, one must notify the police. Even if the smoke does not bother you, you must call the police. It is your responsibility.” During the summer vacation thousands of people flock to vacation resorts to cool off in the water of the creeks and rivers. “Do not jump in unfamiliar waters,” said Coats who added that people who barbecue must do so on stable ground and that they must keep children away. “People must not barbecue close to party tents and huts. Keep your surroundings clean. The garbage could be put in a bag for the garbage truck or it could be buried in a hole. Residents could let the garbage be picked up collectively.
