Shipping agents share cargo info
Shipping agents are complying with the order of NV Havenbeheer Suriname by sharing the cargo information with Suriname’s port authority. Shipments that were seized in the period August 18 to the start of September have been released. “The port authority started releasing the cargoes at the end of September,” said Reza Karg, Manager Corporate Affairs at NV Havenbeheer Suriname. Initial reports indicated that the shipping agents were not complying with the rules and that the shipments were being held at the harbor in response to their non-compliance. Karg explained that the shipments were seized because the cargo information was not accurate. Some of the shipping agents reportedly refused to reveal the contents of the cargo. Those cargoes were then kept at the harbor. The International Maritime Organization has made it clear that all shipping agents are required to share the necessary information about their cargo with the port authorities so that the correct information can be stored in the database. If the shipping agents do not share accurate information, their cargo can’t be found in the system of Havenbeheer. This could result in huge delays.
The attitude of the shipping agents have compelled Havenbeer to introduce stricter rules. Karg pointed out that the port authority and the shipping agents are collaborating to make sure that there are no delays in the processing of shipments at the harbor.
