2,300 kilograms of cocaine intercepted: Customs officer questioned by investigators

-

The police recently questioned a customs officer after more than 2,300 kilograms of cocaine were intercepted at the Jules Sedney Harbor last week. Irvin Kanhai, the attorney representing the customs officer, told Times of Suriname that his client was involved in putting a seal on the freight containers that were filled with bags of rice. The customs officer who was allowed to leave the police station after he had been questioned explained that there was nothing wrong with the containers when they were sealed. Kanhai also provides legal aid to the Oemrawsingh brothers, the men whose rice was in the containers. Kanhai pointed out that one of the brothers has already been questioned. After the investigation was launched, the name of Nitinder Oemrawsingh, was mentioned by various media houses. “The man has not fled or anything and just like his brother he will report to the police,” said Kanhai who added that none of the brothers knew anything about the drugs. The containers with rice were in Paramaribo since December 31. The brothers reportedly were not present when the containers were filled with the bags of rice. Only a supervisor and many other workers were present when the bags of rice were put in the containers at the harbor.
