Ten bus permits revoked over violations

-

The General Surveillance Department of the Police Force Suriname (KPS) and representatives of the Ministry of Public Works, Transport & Communication on Friday revoked ten bus permits from drivers who operated a private bus on the following routes: PS, PE and PSB.

A representative from the Transport Department of the Ministry of Public Works explained that the permits were revoked because the drivers had violated the terms of the license. Officials found out that the regular service buses were being driven by drivers who are younger than the required age. The permit clearly states that a driver who provides public transportation on the public roads must be at least 23 years of age or older. The representative pointed out that the joint task force took firm action in the following regions: Nieuw Weergevondenweg, Coesewijnestraat and Ephraimszegen. She did not rule out that the task force would also carry out its surveillance in other regions because the department receives numerous complaints from passengers. The passengers often complain that the drivers do not stick to the official bus routes and that they often drive recklessly thereby endangering the lives of their passengers and other people. “Most people complain about the bus drivers who operate on the following routes: Lijn 7, PL, PSB, PE and PS. During the operation, traffic fines were handed out to 33 bus drivers as they were either driving recklessly or unnecessarily creating a traffic jam.
