“China wants to give the Surinamese movie industry a boost so that it can experience growth. The Chinese government is therefore providing special training to people who are active in the local movie industry,” said China’s ambassador to Suriname, Liu Quan. The fourth edition of the Chinese Film Festival kicked off with Kung Fu Yoga on the big screen in TBL-Cinemas on Friday night.

The diplomat explained that China’s movie industry has experienced a huge positive growth in the past couple of years. China’s movie industry reportedly produces more than one thousand movies per year. Some of the Chinese movies become box office hits and generate billions of dollars. China wants to share its experience with Suriname. “For this year there are 400 trainings which Suriname can make good use of,” said the ambassador who added that the Surinamese could benefit from this opportunity. Suriname’s Foreign Affairs (BUZA) Minister Yldiz Pollack Beighle who also attended the Chinese Film Festival expressed gratitude on behalf of the nation and pointed out that although the Surinamese movie industry is still in the early phase, several good movies have been produced. The minister wants the local movie industry to produce more movies and achieve greater heights.

Pollack Beighle pointed out that movies bring people together so that they can better understand each other’s culture. The minister applauded the fact that Jackie Chan’s Kung Fu Yoga kicked off the Chinese Film Festival. The Surinamese people are fond of Jackie Chan who is the main character in this movie. After having watched the trailer of Kung Fu Yoga she pointed out that the proof had been given that people from various cultures could produce a beautiful movie.
