Telesur to establish 5G network
“Before the end of 2019 Suriname will be the First country in the region to have a 5G network,” said Telesur CEO Mike Antonius at the 35th Annual Conference of the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunicaions Organizations (Canto), that was held in Port of Spain from July 21 until July 24.
Antonius presented the eSuriname vision to the audience at Trinidad and Tobago. “Telesur wants to contribute to the social economic development of Suriname with a broadband ecosystem,” said Antonius. The CEO had first announced the expansion of Telesur’s LTE network in May 2019. Mobile phone users in nearly the entire coastal area have access to the 4G network that was introduced in 2015. The 5G network makes it possible for objects and appliances to communicate with each other. It also makes the integration with the rest of the world easier. Independent entrepreneurs can also seize the opportunity by partaking in the internet economy and presenting their products and services worldwide. 5G is not only faster internet but it is also a vast ecosystem to enable a connected Suriname. The potential for the social, educational and economic development will grow rapidly.
The 5G network is part of e-Suriname vision with the Telesur National Broadband Project (TNBP) as strategic instrument. The introduction of the 5G network is Telesur’s next big step towards establishing superfast internet in Suriname.
The Canto is a nonprofit association made up of operators, organizations, companies and individuals in the ICT (telecommunications) sector. The Association has a Caribbean focus as it relates to ICT issues for the region with a global perspective.
