Most hospitalised patients at GPHC are young bikers

Most patients that are currently hospitalised in the male surgical ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), are young motorcycle riders. This is according to a senior official at the medical facility.

In a recent interview, with this publication the official, while revealing information garnered from an internal audit of the ward stated that between November 15, 2019 and February 3, 2020 a total of 136 bikers, all men between the ages of 17 and 27 were admitted to the medical facility, with accident related injuries. The official further stated that at the city hospital, almost every two days there are cases of young bikers being involved in accidents at the city hospital.

“The same way the issue of speeding is affecting the police force it is affecting us too. I am not saying that we don’t have enough resources to treat illnesses at the city hospital, but I strongly believe that prevention is better than cure.

“In Guyana we have people that are really sick, persons that are in desperate need for medications to treat issues that they could not have prevented,” the official explained.

Kaieteur News understands that due to the influx of injured bikers in the male surgical ward of the city hospital, there is now a shortage of beds in the unit.

“All it takes is for you to slow down; nothing else. And the way I saw some men riding on this roadways show that they have no regards for anyone. And that is wrong.

“Due to the years I have been working at this medical facility, I have seen bikers being admitted in this medical facility with injuries so severe it cost them their lives. And it amazes me that people are still not learning.”
